From colourful celebrations and spectacular light shows to delicious Indian food and family festivities, here’s how to enjoy Diwali in Dubai this year.
Diwali is one of those celebrations that brings Dubai to life. From colourful decorations and festive lights to family gatherings and plenty of delicious Indian food, the Festival of Lights is a wonderful time to experience the city’s rich cultural diversity.
And the best part? You don’t have to celebrate Diwali yourself to join in the fun or to introduce your children to the traditions behind it.
Together with Indian Women in Dubai, Parenting Plus explores what makes Diwali so special and where families can enjoy the celebrations this year.
✦ What is Diwali, and why is it celebrated?
Often called the Festival of Lights, Diwali is one of India’s most important celebrations, observed by millions of people around the world.
At its heart, Diwali celebrates the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil and hope over despair.
While traditions vary between communities, the festival is associated with new beginnings, prosperity, gratitude and spending time with loved ones.
Families decorate their homes with lights and diyas (small traditional oil lamps), create colourful rangoli patterns, exchange gifts and share delicious sweets.
It’s also a time for generosity, togetherness and reconnecting with family and friends.
For children, Diwali offers a wonderful opportunity to learn about another culture through food, art, music and shared experiences.
✦ When is Diwali in 2026?
This year, Diwali falls on Sunday, November 8, 2026, with festivities taking place across several days.
Dubai’s wider Festival of Lights celebrations run from November 2 to 12, with some of the biggest family-friendly events taking place over the November 6 to 8 weekend.

Sometimes the best celebrations are the ones closest to home.
Dubai Holding communities are hosting free Diwali activities across 17 neighbourhoods, including Jumeirah Village Circle, Al Furjan, Discovery Gardens and Jumeirah Islands.
For parents with younger children, a local celebration can be an easier way to enjoy the festival without the crowds and travel involved in visiting a major attraction.
Check your community’s announcements for dates and activities.
✦ How to introduce Diwali to your children at home
You don’t need to attend a big event to help children appreciate Diwali. Here are a few simple ways to get them involved:
Make your own rangoli: Use coloured paper, flower petals or chalk to create bright patterns together.
Try traditional Indian sweets: Introduce children to favourites such as laddoo, barfi and gulab jamun.
Decorate with lights: Use LED candles or fairy lights to create your own Festival of Lights display.
Explore Indian traditions: Read a children’s book about Diwali or ask Indian friends how their families celebrate.
Talk about kindness: Use the festival’s themes of hope, generosity and gratitude to start meaningful conversations.
✦ Celebrating together in Dubai
One of the joys of raising children in Dubai is the opportunity to experience cultures and traditions from around the world.
Festivals like Diwali give families a chance to learn something new, connect with their neighbours and appreciate the communities that make this city so diverse.
And for Indian families living away from home, these celebrations can also be an important way to keep traditions alive and pass them on to the next generation.
Indian Women in Dubai is also hosting its own Diwali celebration in Jumeirah on Saturday, November 14, offering another opportunity for women to connect and celebrate together.
